Character Information Name/Alias: Zed
Fandom: Code:Breaker
Canonpoint: post canon
Gender: Male
Age: Several centuries
Physical Description: Most often he looks like a mummified corpse, but when he temporarily loses his powers, he looks like a middle-aged man with long blond hair and stubble on his chin.
History: Zed comes from a world a lot like our own, but where there are people with special powers, who do not exist in any registries. They are called Power Users. There are also people called Rare Kinds, who have the power to negate the power of Power Users.
A long time ago, Zed was "unborn" as he calls it. It means that he was born dead; that is, with his body that of a mummified corpse. He became close friends with the Code:Emperor, and eventually he also met Sakurakouji Sakurako and Heike Masaomi. Together the four of them created a group called Eden, meant to protect Power Users.
About one hundred years ago, an incident called
December 32nd happened in which Zed made a group of Rare Kinds undead. He also used his power to make Yukihina undead. The Eden that he had a part in creating changed into something that he didn't like - they stopped protecting and started to kill. So he chose to join the ex-Eden member Sagashimono's group of Power Users, called the Re-Codes.
Zed first appeared in chapter 203 when the Code:Breakers dug out his corpse from his burial spot. Shortly after, his special ability, Death, assaulted them, until he was forced into his Lost Form by Sakura's Rare Kind power. After inquiring about his awakening and hearing Ogami's response, Zed agreed to help them, under one condition: they would throw him a 24-hour long welcoming debauch with lots of girls.
In order to help the the Code:Breakers improve their bilities and strengthen their powers, he shoves the Rare Kinds' Lives into Rui's, Yuuki's and Toki's chests. This causes the three teens to go into Lost State, and also shows how powerful as a Power User Zed is. After all, he could carry three Rare Kind's souls inside him without it having any kind of effect on him.
After his debauch party (which was way too short for his taste) he informs the group that he gave away the Asmodeus Flame's key to a girl called Mishiru, so Ogami could not have it. Zed apologizes, thinking all will be forgiven with just a simple apology. But the Emperor thinks the opposite and tries to fry him.
Zed is a passive onlooker in most situations. He's more interested in taking a bath with the currently-a-mermaid Rui than he is in the Rare Kinds' acts of revenge. He doesn't join into the fray for real even once, and instead enjoys himself by watching Yukihina and Heike fight against each other. And then he gets occupied with holding back Sakurako when Heike goes into ”God” mode, which Sakurako thinks is disgusting, since Heike grows to Godzilla size. When Heike gave Yukihina his life back, Zed was surprised over that, because Heike was the one who asked Zed to remove it in the first place. Heike claimed it was to punish Yukihina for betraying Eden, but in reality it was to protect him. During that time, they were all distracted by the Negation, which meant that everything started to turn dark, and disappear. After Heike left and Yukihina was useless due to confusion about his soul having been returned, Zed helped Sakurako and Kouji to keep the Negation at bay.
After they defeated the Prime Minister, Fujiwara, for causing the Negation, Eden is demolished and Zed sets off with Kouji to search for Power Users and Rare Kinds all over the world.
Previous Game History: imported from
havenrpg When Zed arrived in Haven, he did so in his coffin. He scared his roommates when he got out of it, because it's not like people are used to random corpses talking to them. The first month he almost adopted a kid who sadly happened to be weirded out by him, and he made friends with a couple of people. When a garden was revealed on top of the apartment building that they lived in, he temporarily came back to life since people lost their powers when they were inside the garden. After the garden spread, he helped a little by cleaning up some of the garden, and a little by stopping Apollo from burning everything down. Even though he did make himself useful, for the most part he took his usual passive stance by sitting back, seemingly without a care in the world. This was especially true the next month when an underground school was unveiled, and the children who died in there caused a ruckus. Zed has lived for hundreds of years through many dark times. There isn't much that phases him anymore.
He made friends with more people who were weirded out by him at first, and he flirted with pretty girls. He also sang Christmas carols in the middle of summer, and got himself a fangirl. He investigated the edge of a cliff leading to a deep rift with Giovanni and when his friend the spider lady Rachnera got human legs instead of spider legs, he helped her move around.
When a cliff wall fell and revealed a tunnel that led underground, he helped by clearing it out a little bit, and then he met a man who talked to plants at the end of the tunnel. He met the avatar, Wan, at the drop of the tunnel. Wan's initial impression of Zed was very obviously fear, but after a while they became friends. Even though Wan attacked him with various powers at first, Zed found his response amusing and was initially very curious about his abilities. He helped a girl called Lily get a better stance when shooting with her gun. He also flew a little with Wan, something he had never done before without an airplane. Then he got a student called Izumo-no-Takeru and over time he taught the young man a lot of different things, mostly about modern inventions, history, and languages.
One day, a mist snuck up on the people in Haven, and everyone was dropped into a labyrinth, which turned everyone human and powerless. Zed found his fangirl Ada and the gungirl Lily, and kept an eye on them. He held their hand(s); since the darkness was so thick no one could see anything. At the exit of the labyrinth, he met a kid trying to get through a barrier that only those who killed within the labyrinth could get through. Zed didn't kill anyone. Instead, he took the chance to try dying once, and let Apollo strangle him to death. In Haven, death was common. But for someone like Zed, it was just a new experience; an experiment really, kind of like trying a new kind of food for the first time. He was later revived and returned to his normal mummified state.
At one point, a disturbance to the phones occured, causing the listener to not hear everything being said through them. Some people got Spiral Madness, and tried to turn themselves into spirals. The condition was eventually cured, but several people broke their own bodies in the process of turning themselves into spirals. After that Zed started to call Pitch Black Makura-kun (or Pillow-kun, since Makkura means pitch black) and somehow people started to think that Zed was digging his own grave, much to Zed's amusement.
For a while, half the people of Haven were brought to a prison, and the other to a nice town. Zed was one if the people who was brought to town. He was pretty inactive during that time; though, he could often be found spending his time flirting with girls or getting drunk. When they got back, a doctor called Kite, who was working for those running Haven (the Yao Corporation), was permanently killed, and some of the residents of Haven broke the machine that made people revive. This meant that if people died in Haven, they would stay properly dead, instead of reviving like they previously had.
At random instances, Zed started to teach people how to fold origami. When one of Pitch's nightmare horses wandered around Haven, he fed it canned fruit and made friends with it, much to Pitch's annoyance. He got a new student in Yona, and started to teach her a lot of things about other cultures, modern things, and a lot about plays. He also got another fan (sort of) in Nagachika Hideyoshi, and he had a lovely conversation with people on the network about Shakespeare.
When Haven was attacked by rebels and a lot of people were hurt, Zed turned the fatally wounded John Watson undead for a period of time. Zed also (while singing and dancing because he never does things the normal way) spent a lot of that time using his powers to help keep people from getting hurt by rebels and soldiers fighting each other. Later, he helped rebuild Haven again to the best of his abilities.
Then an announcement came that Haven would close down for a while, and everyone would be put into Storage. Before the closedown, Zed had to stop Sherlock from committing suicide, and he also got to tease Pitch some more. Unfortunately, after that, he was moved into storage along with the remaining residents of Haven.
Personality: Zed's special power is ”death,” but he couldn't be more the opposite of what one might expect of someone with such an ability. He's cheerful and friendly, maybe even – no, not maybe, definitely – overly friendly. But then again, he spends a lot of time six feet under. It's not like a guy who looks like a mummified corpse most of the time has anything to do in their coffin besides napping and thinking, so he enjoys having fun when he's out of it. The very definition of fun for Zed is alcohol, women, more alcohol and mooore women. He's a cheerful guy, not easily offended, an odd friend to have, and someone you'd rather not have as an enemy.
Zed is a true gentleman. Well, not really, but he would like to think that he is one. He can be polite and all, but he tends to foget how ”polite” works. He's nice to just about everyone, especially to the ladies. Or any cute girl, really. You see, he loves women, and he does not hide it. He likes to get inside people's personal space, and likes to drape himself over them. He is very personal around the people that he likes. Not personal as in telling people loads about himself, but he is quick to bodily contact. For example, he has the ability to know when a good woman is close, just from scent. What a good woman is can vary a lot, though. He's not very picky with it, he just likes girls. He is ”a Lover of Women” and likes to touch them, specifically their asses or breasts. On the bare skin if he can manage to. He might also try to convince them into bed, even while knowing that he's most likely to be turned down. There's nothing embarrassing about sex, after all; and he's been a corpse most of the time since he was born so he lives to have fun. It's really the goal of his life. Which is why he is most often hung over when he goes into Lost State and looks alive. So don't be rough when you wake him up, thank you~ But he isn't all about touching women, he just likes the company of them as well.
He is generous, if you ask him. For example, he gives away other people's things to those who ask, especially if those who ask happen to be girls. Like Ogami Rei's Asmodeus Flame. He gave it to Mishiru and didn't think much of it. It's not like Ogami will die if he doesn't get the last flame back. And it's just easy to avoid the Code:Emperor's attacks, so it's no big deal that it pisses the first flame Power User off to the core. He'll just continue to tease him and laugh it off. Another example is when he uses his power on people's request. Like when he made Yukihina an Undead when Heike asked him to, or when he felt sorry for the Rare Kinds and made them Undead after they died.
It's easy for him to ignore people who are poking him with sticks (both figuratively and literally). He's not that easy to upset, and he has never been seen getting angry. He's sort of a pacifist and would rather just share a bottle of some random alcohol with people instead of fight them. But when he mopes, like when he's forced to leave the company of pretty ladies, he cheers up pretty fast, so it's no big deal in the end. Though, when he does, he ends up teasing, and even more so if he goes ignored. He might stick his hand right through a person and pull out their soul just to tease. Most often he does this to Heike, but he also randomly plays with Yukihina's soul, which has been inside of Heike ever since Zed made Yukihina an Undead.
The death of others actually upsets him, and he internally regrets not being able to do anything but revive the Rare Kinds until after they died. Even so, he is the type of person that doesn't let negative emotions show, be it sadness or anger. Zed always want to be of help, and has no problems with helping complete strangers out in whatever way that he can. He's a very kind, dead old man, after all.
He also happen to be forgetful, but obviously it's just something to laugh off, isn't it? Eventually he'll remember the thing(s) that he forgot, so it's really no big deal in the end. He might remember when he's gotten it explained (though he doesn't always listen) and has an opportunity to search his mostly empty mind in the deepest depths to recover whatever it is they're talking about. And he might forget to remember details. Like that time when he he joined the Re-Codes, which is a group that's trying to take down this one organization (that Zed helped founding) called Eden. But he can't remember small details like that.
Personality Changes: As Zed is not exactly the impressionable type, the changes to his personality were slight. He is very old, and has seen the darkest of hours, staring them right in the face; there is so little that will phase him. He's very used to living each day on a whim, moving whichever way the wind is blowing. Being in Haven in itself was just another experience for him. And there were many occurrences that were extra memorable.
The desolate, weathered land and buildings in Haven didn't throw him off in the slightest. After all, he's a talking corpse with the ability to kill people at will, and he's seen a lot of dark things over the past centuries. It was the people he met in Haven that made his time and experiences there absolutely worth it. He learned about people with different kinds of powers, was able to teach others about the world that he came from, and had ample opportunities to be part of something larger, something that created a safer and more comfortable prison for him and the residents to live in.
One aspect of Haven that he throughoutly enjoyed was being able to walk around in his normal, dead-looking state without clashing with the setting. In his own world, people would think a zombie apocalypse was about to start if they saw him walk about (except on Halloween, if he pretended it was a costume). It was very refreshing to walk around without reservation, instead of just laying around in his coffin waiting for some Power User to come dig him up out of his grave. Then there was the part where he could talk to people. Everyone (except very, very few, like Apollo or Pitch Black) got scared of him and freaked out at first. But once they realized that he was incredibly friendly and was not going to try to eat their face, most people calmed down and talked to him. That was even more refreshing than being able to walk around.
To his surprise, he even got a couple of fans - one was a girl called Ada, who happened to be a huge fan of the occult and mistook him for the actual grim reaper (he didn't mind) and the other was a boy called Hide, who thought it was really cool to have a zombie as a friend. That was new to Zed. It wasn't every day that people in his own world thought a walking, talking dead guy was cool. Haven definitely provided more of an avenue to meet and get to know different types of people, with different backgrounds, and unique strengths. Though, he was often the one doing the educating, he also got to learn about different worlds as well.
Somewhere along the way, Zed got it into his head to adopt people. The first one he considered adopting was Vincent Nightray, who was interesting and amusing, and who seemed like he could use a grandpa to help him out. Unfortunately, Vincent did not agree. Not that Zed let that stop him from helping the boy out whenever he found him in a pinch. But he also actually did adopt one person as his grandchild; a young man called Shin-Ah, who was less scared of him than most other people. This, of course, made Zed very happy.
In addition to trying to adopt people in Haven, he acquired several students along the way. It wasn't his intention at first, because he's not exactly the teacher type since he's whimsical and takes nothing seriously. But Zed is always up for something that can prove to be entertaining. He soon found out what a pleasure it was to teach Izumo and Yona about things like modern inventions, different cultures, world history, and words the children were unfamiliar with. They had an exuberant curiosity and a natural love of learning. Inquisitive children are a delight to him. There wasn't much opportunity to teach his companions in his own world. But Haven, with all the people and species from different worlds, provided an avenue of entertainment for sharing information. Besides, teaching things to cute girls was always a plus in his book. Even if Izumo was a guy. Zed also taught a lot of people how to fold different origami figures. It became a regular occurence for Zed to make a network post that served for educational purposes, something that got the residents talking and allowed them to converge and share common interests. In his own way, Zed was doing his best to keep the people of Haven in positive spirits. Even if he isn't the sort of person to come out and say it, he did grow to appreciate and care for many of the people he met in Haven.
One of his favorite experiences was flying without an airplane or any other mechanical invention. He got the opportunity to fly with Wan, who took him high above Haven. There are so very few things that inspire shock or astonishment in Zed. Flying like that is something that he would love to do again someday. He found flying with the help of someone's powers much more exhilirating than it is to fly in an airplane, which he has done on occasion during his Lost hours.
An exciting thing that he is probably pretty alone in finding exciting was that he got to experience actual death. As in the kind that normal people experience every day. Every time he goes from Lost and back to normal, he technically die, but it's not really the same as being mortal and dying. When he was stuck as a mortal, he didn't give a second thought to letting Apollo kill him. After all, you've got to experience as many things as possible when you have the chance!
Zed did manage to calm down on the groping front, mostly because of the young age of the girls that he made friends with. Not that he has any issues with younger women (or he would have no one to give his attention, since he's a very old corpse), but he did realize that the setting was a little upsetting to them, and that groping them might cause needless distress during the times. Plus, he noticed that several of the girls had their hearts set on someone, even if not all of them noticed it themselves. Zed is more attentive than he likes to pretend.
The world he's originally from was already dark and something people had to force their way through. In the end, Zed is largely the same unchanged, ridiculous, not-taking-things-seriously old man that he's been for centuries. But the people he met and the experiences he shared along the way had a hand in helping him find new methods to entertain himself.
Abilities: Zed's special ability is Death, which is the supreme power to invite all living things to the "Realm of Death", without any exception. When it is active, he has the ability to emit dark tendrils of energy from his body that coil around his target's body and have the power to draw out their life, both effectively killing them and preventing Power Users from accessing their abilities. Even a Rare Kind's Divine Shield ability is ineffective against it; however, it has been shown that a Rare Kind's Death God power is capable of effectively countering its effects.
Since it is so powerful, Zed normally appears dead. He's been said to be the "worst enemy" because of his power to render his opponents useless and/or dead. However, during the 24-hour period that he's in his Lost Form (when a Power User temporarily loses their power because they have overused it and need to recharge), he is temporarily revived.
According to Zed, Death is the power to materialize "life" and retrieve it. When in his Lost Form, Zed is capable of reaching into the bodies of others, seemingly liquefying the body and pulling out a small glowing orb with markings made from the person's' blood engraved on it. So long as the "life" remains outside of that person, they cannot die as they technically aren't living. The undead individuals retain markings of blood on their chest matching those that are on their "life" ball. The orbs can be stored inside other people's bodies, to keep them out of reach from the people who may want to retrieve their "life." A Rare Kind's' "life" is colored differently from a Power User's'. Also, if he has Rare Kind blood, he can use it to keep his power under control and extend his Lost hours.
